NYFW SS20: The Row

The Row - I Mean Business

Some people aren't always aware but The Row is the designer fashion brand brain child of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. First they were fashion icons and then they started their own brand. Well two brands actually, they also work on Elizabeth and James. I looked at The Row last season as I really do think it is one of the most wearable runways. There is an elegant simplicity to the clothes they create. When I see the runway I am always reminded of Cos because they are brands which create staple pieces which are refined yet heavy on your bank balance.

Spring/Summer 2020

Last season The Row runway was dominated by neutrals but this season it seems to be more monochrome. One trend which remains is tailoring, there is a lot of sharp lines in this collection which make you look effortlessly smart. One element which contrasts this smartness is the PVC sandals. I just do not get it, I guess PVC is having its moment in heels but really, sandals? I think it is a hideous concept.

There were two looks I enjoyed in this show, an every day look and an evening look. Both are understated but if you were to see someone wearing The Row, you would know they are chic. The first look is a simple shirt/trouser combo. This sounds like nothing unique but it is the details that I love. Even though the shirt is long with the sleeves pushed up, it looks oversized but not where it could be your dads shirt. It is fitted but not ridiculously so. This shirt is then paired with a tapered pair of camel trousers which are slim but not skinny and they are tucked up at the bottom which I love. I just think when you consider a shirt and trouser combo you think frumpy but this outfit is the complete opposite and the same goes for the few evening wear pieces in the collection.

The evening dress is literally a black dress which once again on its own doesn't sound like much but the ease of this piece is what is so beautiful. There is a fold over at the top of the dress which is basically the only real detail but it then goes in at the waist and flows out. Plus, is that pockets I see? I mean that automatically makes it the perfect dress. I like that the model is tall enough not to need heels but for me this would require heels, for sure. Honestly this is the evening dress of dreams and I love how the shape of the dress creates an hourglass shape, even if you do not have curves. The simplicity of the entire show is gorgeous and the exact opposite of something like Jeremy Scott.

Based on This Show, What Should You Add to Your S/S Wardrobe?

PVC Sandals? I back PVC panels in shoes, I adore the Gianvito Rossi Plexi Pumps but I refuse to accept Plexi sandals. Hun, I do not want to see you gross foot on display in a sweat inducing shoe. I get that there is more breathablility in a sandal but still the fact that someones foot is basically out puts these shoes lower down on the hideous shoe list, lower than the flip flop. At least flip flops are beach appropriate, please tell me where you are wearing PVC sandals!

Top up on the Basics. I always think it is worth spending more on your basics because they are going to be the pieces you get the most wear out of and I think you can tell when a basic piece is cheaper. There is no thought into the look of the garment or how it is constructed when it is a lower priced item whereas when you look at The Row, you can tell they are expensive. As I mentioned, The Row has the same quality and sharp lines that somewhere like COS does. COS is not cheaper but it certainly isn't designer prices like The Row.

Replace Knitwear With Tailoring. During the A/W19 runway, The Row featured some gorgeous knitwear layered under some sharp oversized coats. The coats are still present this season but the absence of knitwear is obviously due to the season. Who the hell would be wearing cashmere in Summer? Blazers, short sleeve shirts and tapered trousers are the way forward for S/S20, according to The Row.

Finally Petite People Rejoice, Roll Ups are in. For most of my life I have had to roll up the bottom of my jeans because I am so petite and no jeans fit me. Before I could afford Topshop jeans I really struggled so all of my jeans ended up being rolled up and The Row have done that to the tapered trousers in this runway and I love it. Finally a petite way of life has been represented on the runway.
