Antidote For A Heatwave

What to do on the hottest day of the year so far?  Fortunately my home has thick granite walls so inside a haven of cool has been located. The thermometer is nudging 35 degrees outside. Far too hot for an English petal!

Better half has headed to eldest son's flat to paint. I think he would have liked a companion. Sometimes it's good to say no and relish the space and quiet and indoor cool. I'll make it up but the temperature will need to drop by at least ten degrees.

Instead I'm reminded of a glorious day spent at Orford in Suffolk, recently. A steely day with a goodly breeze blowing. Fresh.

We chose to walk by the River Alde, soaking up the wildlife, the glorious skies and countryside. A quiet place with black headed gulls and skylarks. Ancient wrecks of boats littered the shore along with numerous areas of mudflats. Barley fields swayed in the breeze and wild flowers grew with abandon.

Butterflies were evident despite the cloudy day. Mostly Meadow Browns, Ringlets and Small Heath. Time spent wandering pathways looking up to the ever changing scene.

Circling around we joined a country lane heading back into Orford and the castle. We wandered round the castle with an excellent audio guide. The top was best with far reaching views of Orford Ness. An area filled with the remnants of ministry of Defence research buildings from a previous era. Chilling to even think about what went on there in the distant past. Now the area has been returned to nature and is home to wildlife instead.

The town of Orford is well worth a visit, whatever the weather.

So how are you coping? With the weather, with the news of Boris, with life. Time to distract myself I think!
